How Much are Dam Liners in Kenya?

The cost of water pan or dam liners in Kenya are as follows;

  • 0.3 mm goes for KES 200 per square meter.
  • 0.5 mm at KES 230 per square meter.
  • 0.75mm at KES 320 per square meter.
  • 1 mm at KES 430 per square meter.

Why Water Pan Liners are Essential

It has become difficult to fully engage in farming activities due to constant climate change and low rainfall. However, you can keep your farm green and productive all year long through irrigation. For irrigation efficiency and reliability, a consistent water source must be available. If you don’t have access to a reliable water source, you can make a water pan and use a liner to keep it waterproof. You can collect rainwater in the water pan or directly pump water from nearby sources for use in irrigation or domestic needs.

Types of Water Pan Liners in Kenya

0.3mm (300 microns)

  • The lowest thickness in our dam liners.
  • Ideally best for reinforcement of small water pans and especially for areas with soft loam soil.
  • Highly flexible and often easier to join by welding or hot wedge machine.
  • Durable for 15-20 years.

0.5mm (500 microns)

  • Medium thickness liner which is ideal for less boosting water storage in areas with less porous soil.
  • Ideal for medium sized projects; from 200M sq to 1,000M sq area.
  • Best for a lightly rough terrain with murram.
  • It has a long shelf life, often 20-25 years.

0.75mm (750 microns) Liners

  • Slightly higher thickness than 0.5 mm liner.
  • Great for medium-to-large projects; from 200M sq to any size
  • Best for handling tough applications including concrete tanks, sewage waste and industrial uses.
  • Can withstand murram soil or rocky ground surfaces.
  • Durable for 25 – 35 years.

1mm (1,000 microns) Liners

  • Recommended for large projects; from 1,000M sq to any size
  • Can withstand extremely hot or colder temperatures, rough soil surfaces and rocks.
  • Often best for handling tough industrial chemicals, waste and storing agricultural water in large water reservoirs.
  • Longer lifespan of up to 50 years.

Dam Liners for Fish Farming

Beyond farm water storage, fishponds also make use of water pan liners to ensure water levels are not dropping. Underground leakages is one factor that often affects water storage in dams and ponds, especially in sand soil. With the use of or pond liners, you can store large volumes of water and breed variety of fish species.

How to enhance efficiency with Water Pan Liners

  • Smoothen the ground soil surface to prevent imbalance when installing the liner
  • Always cover the water pan or fishpond with a shade net or structure to prevent evaporation.
  • You can also use a bird net around the fishpond to keep predator birds away.
  • A ditch or drainage trench should be dug around the pond to prevent sedimentation that often occurs from surface run off water.

How to Start Harvesting Water Using Pan Liners

Find out the Water requirements in your farm or home

You first need to assess the water volumes needed to water your crops or as per domestic needs. Remember different crops have different flow rates. When you are certain of the water needs you would obviously make a water pan that will hold enough water.

Determine the area to place your water pan

When planning to dig a dam or water collection pond, you must consider the terrain of the area. It needs to be a flat area.

Take measurements

Often done in a site visit by our team. You only need to keep in mind that this step is necessary for accurate measurements, and a fee is required as per the place.

Buy a suitable water pan liner

After the site visit, our team will prepare a quote for the best liner size that matches your water needs. Make payments to ensure you are served faster.

Clear the area

In case of vegetation or bushes, clear them to ease the excavation.

Planning for the installation

After we verify payment, we immediately schedule for the day that your water pan liner installation takes place.

Actual installation

Our team sets to your area and installs the liner.

Testing and launching

Once installation is complete you must ensure water is available nearby to check if the liner is properly lined. If no leaks are detected it is good to start storing water for your use.

How to Install Water Pan Liners: Step-by-step Guide

  1. Site selection – start by choosing the best place to excavate, often a flat place that can make a basin to collect water.
  2. Excavation of the area – excavate the measured area to create a water pan of your desired size and shape.
  3. Smoothen the surfaces – after excavation and soil removal, smoothen the surface of the water pan. Ensure the edges are slanting to enhance ease of installation.
  4. Lay the liner – spread and place the liner while ensuring it uniformly touches the entire surfaces.
  5. Weld the liner in case of large water pans – if the dam liner needs welding to securely fit large dams use a welding machine and join at an overlap of 1 m.
  6. Make trenches around the dam – 1m trenches need to be dug around the dam for holding the liner.
  7. Bury the edges of the dam liner on a trench – an extension of 1 m needs to be included in the measurement of the liner. The extension is to ensure the material is firmly attached to the surface of the water pan.
