Drip Irrigation
Drip irrigation has risen to be the most adopted and most reliable method of irrigation in Kenya. This is because the main intention of water is to the roots of the plants, and that’s what this method really does. I have seen so many farmers struggle with other methods like using rain guns, furrow, or the common pivot irrigation technique.
Their main complaint is huge loss of water (Water Wastage) but we have tried to educate them on how drip irrigation works. They have expressed their interest on how water trickles slowly to the most important part of the crop. Our latest research that was done Jan,2024 it depicts that this method has 95% Significance compared to others like sprinklers at 50%.

- Works for both water and fertilizers : Drip method is the most efficient for both water and nutrients in form of fertigation. Fertilizers can also be injected to the roots of the plants through the drip.
- Uses locally available materials: Drip system uses locally made water pipes for irrigation (HDPE Pipes) and also their fittings. This is easy to connect, and the most important thing is they are UV Treated.
- Reduces Diseases : Drip is good in plants health because they work as plant protection agents against diseases.

In our irrigation layouts, we group piping according to the size and how they will be used in the irrigation.
- The main pipe that is from the source usually takes 1 roll of 100m per acre. Its size varies, but in 1 acre HDPE Pipe 50 mm is commonly used.
- Then at least 2 more rolls that will link to the drip line. We commonly use HDPE Pipe 40 mm for this section.

- Drip Lines : Drip Lines are available in the following thickness: 0.3 mm & 0.4 mm both they come with various spacings that’s 15 cm, 20 cm and 30 cm. Their prices are KES. 8000 & KES. 9,000 respectively. 1 acre would use like 7-10 Drip lines depending on how many lines per bed concept.
