Drip Irrigation Water Requirement for Onions
Onion requires ideal watering for 30-45 days with a water supply of 6-8 mm daily deep below the soil from the transplanting until bulb formation. When the onions mature, you should lower the rate of irrigation to a range of 5-7 mm depth per day. Ensure to maintain the reduced rate of irrigation for about 20-30 days while bulbs start growing large.
Drip Irrigation Frequency for Onions
Conducting drip irrigation 3 or 4 times per week is enough to provide sufficient water for onions to develop fully. Ensure you irrigate for at least 30 or 40 minutes to ensure a proper water supply to your onions.
Component Requirement to Drip Irrigate Onions
Driplines
Driplines are necessary as the main part of drip irrigation and distribute water through dripline emitters. With equal spacing and size of emitter holes, equal volumes of water contribute to uniform onion bulb yields
HDPE Connection Pipes
The start section often requires High Density Polythene pipes, which are durable, quality, and applicable in various connections.
Fertigation Kits
Fertilizer injectors work best to reduce labor-intensive manual fertilizer application. Connect them to the mainline section of your drip irrigation to ensure irrigation and fertilizer application is done easily. It requires only soluble fertilizers and siphoning should be done through the fertilizer tanks.
HDPE Pipe Fittings
For connection of mainline pipes together with sub mainline and dripline pipes.
Filters
A way to get rid of debris, silt, and sediments from irrigation water as it blocks driplines and pipes when left. Plastic filters are available in different sizes which can be applicable depending on the irrigation system extent.
Drip Fittings
For connection of sub mainline pipes to driplines on the beds.
Spacing for Onion Drip Kits
The ideal spacing in drip irrigation for onions is 15 or 20 cm between individual plant holes. You can do 3 or 4 driplines per bed taking a spacing 30 cm.

Mainline Pipe Connection
Drill the tank and insert a tank connector on the wall near the bottom. Connect the start or mainline pipe to the tank using a tank connector. Connect a pressure regulator, water filter and ball valve.
Digging Trenches for Mainline Pipe Connection
Make trenches on the mainline pipe section and sub-mainline sections. Lay and connect HDPE pipes using appropriate fittings. Connect the sub-mainline pipes. Use end caps to close the ends of sub-mainline pipes.
Riser/ lateral Pipe Connection
Drill the submainline pipe on intervals you as per the spacing you choose to space driplines. Insert rubber grommets and starter connector then connect 16 mm PE lateral pipes.
Dripline Connection
Lay driplines on the beds from one end to the other. Use the offtake connectors to join Lateral pipes to the driplines. Connect end plugs on the ends of driplines
Flushing the System
Once you have connected all driplines, pump water into the tank and open the flow to flush the system.
Test the System
Test the uniformity of flow by opening one valve at a time.
